International Pricewatch - Global Retail Food and Grocery Prices
Tesco - price comparison with UK/Global Prices
Zimbabwe vs. Botswana Prices
The original Zimbabwe pricewatch system from the days of hyperinflation - 2006... -
What I would like to see from Tesco and from all supermarkets globally is an XML file issued monthly which
details current prices and where the products are globally comparable (e.g. products tend to vary by brand and
packaging between english-, french-, spanish-, arabic-speaking etc worlds...)
Then it will be possible to process these XML format files and indicate:
- which countries have on average high, average and relatively low supermarket food prices
- which supermarkets in each country have on average high, average and relatively low food prices
- which supermarkets in each country show a lot of variability (i.e. some low prices, some high prices), and which
because of that may have to be handled carefully by the shopper
- which products by country tend to be inexpensive or expensive
These XML files can be posted on supermarkets websites available for all to download and analyse....
The regulation required and/or the computer processing and results publishing could be something useful for Governments and for NGO's to occupy their time with - i.e. something which
actually helps people, saves people money, and therefore potentially alleviates poverty
PS - Tesco and other UK supermarkets have a very bad and deserved reputation for squeezing suppliers almost to the wall -
that is yet another issue, which I hope to tackle sometime soon.... watch this space......
